Pat MartinoWhen the anesthesia wore off, Pat Martino looked up hazily at his parents and his doctors. and tried to piece together any memory of his life.

One of the greatest guitarists in jazz, Martino had suffered a severe brain aneurysm and underwent surgery after being told that his condition could be terminal. After his operations he could remember almost nothing. He barely recognized his parents. and had no memory of his guitar or his career. He remembers feeling as if he had been "dropped cold, empty, neutral, cleansed, ... naked."

In the following months. Martino made a remarkable recovery. Through intensive study of his own historic recordings, and with the help of computer technology, Pat managed to reverse his memory loss and return to form on his instrument. His past recordings eventually became "an old friend, a spiritual experience which remained beautiful and honest." This recovery fits in perfectly with Pat's illustrious personal history. Since playing his first notes while still in his pre-teenage years, Martino has been recognized as one of the most exciting and virtuosic guitarists in jazz. With a distinctive, fat sound and gut-wrenching performances, he represents the best not just in jazz, but in music. He embodies thoughtful energy and soul.

Born Pat Azzara in Philadelphia in 1944, Pat was first exposed to jazz through his father, Carmen "Mickey" Azzara, who sang in local clubs and briefly studied guitar with Eddie Lang. He took Pat to all the city's hot-spots to hear and meet Wes Montgomery and other musical giants. "I have always admired my father and have wanted to impress him. As a result, it forced me to get serious with my creative powers."

He began playing guitar when he was twelve years old. and left school in tenth grade to devote himself to music. During Visits to his music teacher Dennis Sandole, Pat often ran into another gifted student, John Coltrane, who would treat the youngster to hot chocolate as they talked about music.

Besides first-hand encounters with `Trane and Montgomery, whose album Grooveyard had "an enormous influence" on Martino, he also cites Johnny Smith, a Stan Getz associate, as an early inspiration. "He seemed to me, as a child. to understand everything about music," Pat recalls.

Martino became actively involved with the early rock scene in Philadelphia, alongside stars like Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon and Bobby Darin. His first road gig was with jazz organist Charles Earland, a high school friend. His reputation soon spread among other jazz players, and he was recruited by bandleader Lloyd Price to play hits such as Stagger Lee on-stage with musicians like Slide Hampton and Red Holloway.

Martino moved to Harlem to immerse himself in the "soul jazz" played by Willis “Gatortail” Jackson and others. He previously had "heard all of the so called “white” jazz. “I’d never heard that part of our culture," he remembers, until the Montgomery Brothers. The organ trio concept had a profound influence on Martino's rhythmic and harmonic approach. and he remained in that idiom as a sideman, gigging with Jack McDuff and Don Patterson. An icon before his eighteenth birthday, Pat was signed as a leader for Prestige Records when he was twenty. His seminal albums from this period include classics like Strings!, Desperado, El Hombre and Baiyina (The Clear Evidence), one of jazz's first successful ventures into psychedelia.

In 1976, while performing internationally with his fusion group “Joyous Lake” Martino began experiencing seizures, which were eventually diagnosed as AVM, a condition he was born with. After surgery and recovery, he resumed his career when he appeared in 1987 in New York, a gig that was released on a CD with an appropriate name, The Return. He then took another hiatus when both of his parents became ill, and he didn't record again until 1994, (after their death) when he recorded Interchange a nd then The Maker.

Today, Martino lives in Philadelphia again and continues to grow as a musician. As the New York Times noted, "Mr. Martino is back and he is plotting new musical direc tions, adding more layers to his myth." His experiments with guitar synthesizers, (begun during his rehabilitation) are taking him in the direction of orchestral arra ngements and they promise groundbreaking possibilities. Musicians flock to his door for lessons, and he offers not only the benefits of his musical knowledge, but als o the philosophical insights of a man who has faced and overcome enormous obstacles. "The guitar is of no great importance to me," he muses. "The people it brings to me are what matter. They are what I'm extremely grateful for, because they are alive. The guitar is just an apparatus."

The current incarnation of The Dead Daisies is taken from a musical collective created originally by a rotating line-up that has left their mark on the high-class brand of Rock ‘n’ Roll the band is known for. The band features in their ranks some of the finest Rockers on the planet, among them one of the premier lead guitarists of this day and age, Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio). Since exploding onto the scene in 2012, The Dead Daisies have taken the music world by storm, releasing three albums to date and touring with the biggest names in Rock including: ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, Judas Priest, KISS, Whitesnake, Def Leppard and the Hollywood Vampires.

In an era where Rock music has been proclaimed dead time and time again, the Daisies defy the critics with ease. This is more than evident on their last studio album, 2016’s ‘Make Some Noise’ with twelve songs packed full of exciting Rock ‘n’ Roll hooks and riffs. It’s loud, energetic, and uplifting – and most importantly: it’s real. The songs were written produced with mega-producer Marti Frederiksen (Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe), receiving huge praise from the music press, and smashing straight into 23 charts globally.

The ‘Make Some Noise’ World Tour 2016 kicked off in Germany with The Hollywood Vampires, then continued to conquer some of the biggest festivals in Europe, including Woodstock Poland, where they played to over 250.000 people. Sold-out Summer Shows, a US trek with KISS, as well as headline gigs in LA at the famed Whisky-A-Go-Go and Webster Hall in New York City.

The band then journeyed on to make their live debut in the Far East, where they wowed the crowds at Loud Park Festival in Japan and brought the spirit of homegrown, American Rock ‘n’ Roll to the US Military in South Korea as part of their first USO Tour. Bringing a hugely successful, sold-out tour to its glorious conclusion, the Daisies embarked on the sixth installment of the mighty KISS Kruise, closing the Europe 2016 chapter with a thundering live show on high seas.

The real Rock ‘n’ Roll magic happens on-stage, with the band and audience feeding off each other’s energy, which is where The Dead Daisies really excel. By capturing their show in all its loud and powerful glory, the band created ‘Live & Louder’ – their first ever live record, which has received nothing but the highest praise from music press and fans alike following its worldwide release on May 19th.

There is a whole planet to conquer and the band currently finds themselves on a world tour of epic proportions seeing them play to an ever-increasing audience, including their frenzied fans from Latin America. The Dead Daisies always look to push boundaries, continually doing things they haven’t done before, and this tour is no different.

The band has played some of the biggest festivals in Europe this year, including Download, Hellfest, Graspop, Sweden Rock and Rock Hard Festival. Leaving in their wake a plethora of overjoyed fans staggering home from numerous sold-out headline shows, the band have once again made a monumental impression in Europe. Meanwhile, wild Japanese crowds have clamored for The Dead Daisies to return to the Land of the Rising Sun – a call that did not go unanswered, seeing the band perform two gargantuan shows playing Tokyo and Osaka in July.

Barely having strummed the last chord, the band took off again to play their first ever concerts in Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Mexico – huge club shows packed to the rafters with a whole mass of newly converted Daisies believers. The band followed this with an appearance at the Woodstock Festival in Poland rocking alongside a 60-piece orchestra which was an amazing spectacle watched by over a quarter of a million people.

Finally, the band returned to the US for ‘The Dirty Dozen’ tour. Joining forces with 12 of the country’s biggest Harley-Davidson dealers for the revved-up ‘Rock N Ride’ promotion, the Daisies made their high-octane comeback to the Full Throttle Saloon in Sturgis, then stormed through major cities such as Chicago, Toronto, New York & Los Angeles in August, followed by playing The Easyriders Rodeo and the National H.O.G. Rally in September – all this in partnerships with high-ranking US sports bodies the New York Yankees and NASCAR.

Meanwhile, the band unleashed a social media tornado, smashing over a million hits on the music video for ‘(We’re An) American Band’ in a matter of only a few weeks, preceded only days earlier by passing the 1.5 million mark for the video of ‘Long Way To Go’.

With Marti Frederiksen at the helm, the band is currently in Nashville finishing their 4th studio album.

Coinciding with the highly anticipated album release in April 2018, yet another massive World Tour will commence.

MICHAEL LEE FIRKINS - Europe 2018 tour dates - Vienna, 4 April

Michael Lee Firkins has announced a 22 date European tour this Spring in support of his new studio release Knock On Wood. Accompanied by Barend Courbois on bass and Chris Siebken on drums, the trio will be playing in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and UK.

Michael will be releasing a new blues rock CD EP entitled Knock on Wood which the guitarist describes as “swampadelic classic Rock and Roll!”. Knock on Wood will only available for sale at the live shows as a limited-edition CD and won’t be offered on digital platforms such as iTunes or Spotify.

“The goal of this tour like most tours is simply – to progress as musicians”, explains Michael. “I don't know a better way to progress as a musician then to play a bunch of dates with your band mates in Europe. It's a careful balance between making sure you're moving forward musically (which is the main point) versus knowing that you're playing a lot of new places that haven't seen you play any of your songs before! So that song that you feel might be overplayed is also brand new to somebody else. I will sign each copy of Knock On Wood for you and I can't wait for you to hear it! See you out there!”
