WOLFGANG MUTHSPIEL and KARL RATZER - 20th Anniversary Concert – Porgy & Bess Club

GuitarMania Photostory - In mid-September, the Porgy & Bess Jazz Club celebrated its 20th anniversary with a three-day open air street festival. The “Porgy”, as most Austrians call it, is one of Europe’s most renowned jazz clubs. On 13 September, GuitarMania attended concerts by 16h Kompost3, featuring Martin Eberle, Benny Omerzell, Manuel Mayr, Lukas König, as well as concerts by Austrian guitarists WOLFGANG MUTHSPIEL (with drummer Rune Arnesen), and KARL HEINZ RATZER & HEINZ CZADEK PROJECT. In spite of cooler temperatures and occasional rainfall, the concert evening once again showed the world-class musicianship of these great Austrian artists.

WOLFGANG MUTHSPIEL is one of Austria’s most popular contemporary jazz guitarists. He played with many notable musicians, including Dave Liebman, Peter Erskine, Bob Berg, Gary Peacock, Gary Burton, and John Patitucci. In 2003, he won the European jazz price. Together with drummer Rune Arnesen, Wolfgang played a great show and showed creativity by  looping his own playing. The audience was also impressed by Wolfgang's great voice.

KARL RATZER, born in 1950, is a living legend. The Austrian guitarist played with many international artists, including Art Farmer, Clark Terry, Lee Konitz, Chaka Khan und Eddie Lockjaw Davis in the past. Even though we would have wished that the artist played more guitar that night, his outstanding phrasing showed that he ranks among Austria’s best players of all time.

GuitarMania would like to say thank you for 20 years of outstanding music. Happy Birthday Porgy & Bess!
